The nationwide figure for 2004 was 26 / 100,000 inhabitants. By way of comparison, the rates in the USA, Canada, and the UK were about 6, 2 and 2 respectively. The latest figures show that South Africa has a rate of 39 and Colombia 38.
The ten states with the worst murder rate in Mexico are:
Rank State Incidence of murders (/100,000 inhabitants)
1 Guerrero 36.8
2 Oaxaca 34.1
3 Baja California 30.4
4 Sinaloa 28.3
5 Nayarit 27.2
6 Chihuahua 26.6
7 Michoacán 26.1
8 México 25.3
9 Quintana Roo 22.1
10 Durango 21.9
Mexico’s crime figures are analyzed in chapter 28 of Geo-Mexico: the geography and dynamics of modern Mexico

Tony, these figures are from 2004? Given the events in Ciudad Juárez, etc, in the past year, i am really eager to know what the stats are in 2010. Can you help? Gracias!

[Contestado por correo-electónico] – with the exception of homicides, we do not believe the data on crimes at the state or municipal level lends itself to an in-depth analysis. In Geo-Mexico, we do use national figures for some categories of crime to make comparisons with a range of other countries, but do not think that too much should be made of these comparisons given the uncertain quality of much of the data.
Best data we’ve seen so far for various kinds of crime at the state level: http://www.icesi.org.mx/estadisticas/estadisticas_oficiales.asp
It is very hard to get an accurate homicide rate for Mexico since anyone attempting must use the Mexican government figures which are totally unreliable. Many homicides in Mexico go unreported or for political reasons are not mentioned. Anyone who simply disappears is not recorded as a homicide. No body, no homicide.
